How to read a college placement report

Understand what an outcome statistic tells you—and what it leaves unanswered.

Identify the cohort

Check the programme, campus, graduation year and study mode behind the report. A university-wide statistic may combine very different courses. A campus MBA figure should not be presented as an outcome for an online BBA cohort.

Look beyond the highest package

The highest offer describes one end of the distribution. Ask for median figures, the number of students included, the number seeking placement and the proportion placed. Check whether international and domestic offers are mixed and what the compensation figure includes.

Separate offers from students

One student can receive multiple offers. The number of offers therefore may not equal the number of students placed. Ask how repeat offers, internships, self-sourced jobs and higher-study decisions are counted.

Understand the support provided

Career support can include résumé workshops, interview practice, employer sessions and job-board access. These are useful services, but they are not an employment guarantee. Ask which services your exact programme and study mode can access.

Connect outcomes to preparation

Recruitment depends partly on your skills, prior experience, communication and the opportunities available when you graduate. Compare curriculum and practical work alongside reported outcomes. Build projects and seek feedback during the degree, not only in the final semester.

Ask for the original report

Prefer a dated institution-published report or relevant official disclosure to a cropped advertisement. Record definitions and limitations. If the institution cannot explain a number clearly, treat it as unresolved information in your comparison sheet.

Your next step

Write down what you know, what remains unconfirmed and the next person or official source to consult. Save the printable version below and use it during conversations with institutions.
